Being supported by significant advances in technology, especially in the war department (guns), it was easy for them to start to take over land.
At first, there was a negotiation process in which they both established a commercial relationship, but it wasn't long until the settlers got progressively more agressive, reaching the doctrine of Manifest Destiny.
