El alga es la planta mas antigua del mundo, esto pudo ser determinado gracias a que los investigadores pudieron mirar dentro de ella mediante una tomografia microscopica de rayos x, que proporciona imagenes tridimencionales y asi pudieron observar cada celula antigua de cada alga lo que parecen ser cloroplastos donde se producen las fotosintesis de las plantas.
